When I took The Nonprofit Center's workshop, "Best Practices in Board Governance," there was one exasperated ED who was asking what to do about a board member who had been serving for 52 years!

An excellent and eye opening post! What is your opinion on term limits for board members and officer roles? I know the nonprofit world varies widely in whether boards even have terms, and any limits on the number of terms one can serve. It seems to me that it can also be dangerous to have a board whose membership is too stagnant. Alternatively, I can understand the value of having board members that have a long history with the organization. Add that to how difficult it is to attract new board members, and you might have a catch-22.
